He was born in Livorno, and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence under Luigi Bartolini, then moved to Rome where he continued studies at the Accademia Fiorentina in that city, studying under Pietro Tenerani.
He befriended Pietro Tenerani, Luigi Pampaloni, and Lorenzo Bartolini during his travels, but was mainly active in Naples, where he became Professor of Design.
In Rome, Theed is believed to have studied under Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and Italian Pietro Tenerani, as well as John Gibson and Richard James Wyatt.
