They are polyphagous in coniferous trees (mainly feeding on Pinus sylvestris, Pinus mugo and Pinus nigra, but also on Picea abies and Abies or Larix species).

The plateau extends over 240 hectares with a great landscape diversity - alternating valleys, forests of Austrian pines, oak, ash, shrubland, and vast flat plains peppered with groves.
The larvae primarily feed on Pinus contorta var. contorta, but they have also been recorded on introduced Pinus mugho, Pinus nigra and Pinus radiata.
At present Juken Nissho controls around 550 km² of Pinus radiata, Douglas-fir and Corsican pine.
