The most successful club from the province are by far SSC Napoli, who have won Serie A (the Italian Championship) twice and the UEFA Cup while Diego Maradona was with the club.

After gaining promotion to Serie D, the club began groundsharing with Juve Stabia another club from the Province of Naples at the Stadio Romeo Menti, instead of playing at their Stadio San Michele in Gragnano.

In the mid-1980s, the Alfieri clan expanded its hegemony in the province of Naples in different directions towards Pomigliano d'Arco, Agro Nocerino Sarcese along the coastline between Castellamere di Stabia and Torre Annunziata and into the Vesuvius area in the municipalities of Somma Vesuviana, Sant'Anastasia and Volla.

At the 2001 census the municipality had a population of 27,132 inhabitants and a population density of 8,027.2 persons/km², making it the most densely populated comune in Italy outside the Province of Naples (although it was only seventh overall, behind Portici, Casavatore, San Giorgio a Cremano, Melito di Napoli, Naples, and Arzano).
