This section through Ryde and along Ryde Pier was built and owned jointly by the LB&SCR and the London and South Western Railway.
Between 1987-8 Nigel worked on a series of paintings and drawings based upon Ryde Pier on the Isle of Wight.
The first recorded pier in England was Ryde Pier, opened in 1814 on the Isle of Wight, as a landing stage to allow ferries to and from the mainland to berth.
•
The earliest structures were Ryde Pier, built in 1813/4, Leith Trinity Chain Pier, built in 1821, and Brighton Chain Pier, built in 1823.
However, trains were run by the independent Isle of Wight Railway and Isle of Wight Central Railway, who owned the tracks beyond St John's Road and operated through services to Ventnor and Cowes via Newport respectively.
