In the 16th century, the Akiyama clan were noted relatives of the Takeda clan of Kai province.
It was a powerful clan of Shinano Province, particularly during the Sengoku period, when it had frequent clashes with its neighbor in Kai, the Takeda clan.
When the Takeda clan invaded their territory in 1553, the Takanashi allied with the Murakami, Ogasawara, and Suda clans.

He served the Uesugi clan, but later switched allegiances and became a retainer of the Takeda clan of Kai Province.
The Takeda clan would go on to fight the Hōjō clan in Suruga province, taking Kanbara castle from Tsunashige in the siege of Kanbara and Fukuzawa town from Tsunanari in the 1571 siege of Fukuzawa.
