In July 1978 the school moved into the building of the former Kaiserliche Realschule, later known as Deutsche Höhere Privatschule (DHPS, German Higher Private School), in Leutwein Street (today Robert Mugabe Avenue).
The town was founded by Germans under the command of Colonel Theodor von Leutwein in 1897 as a small military base in order to explore the northern area of German South-West Africa.
During his tenure there, Leutwein created a decentralized administration with three regional centers (Windhoek, Otjimbingwe and Keetmanshoop).
