Almost Human: Making Robots Think

From June 15 to July 31 of 1997, Carnegie Mellon University deployed the robotic Nomad rover to traverse the Atacama Desert of Northern Chile.

Antofagasta

The urban area of Antofagasta begins abruptly, breaking the monotony of the desert and is located in the coastal plains, south of the “Peninsula of Mejillones” and north of “Cerro Coloso”.

The city has little vegetation because it is situated in the Atacama Desert, which is the world's driest desert.

In 2007, researchers found the fossil remains of a prehistoric penguin, Icadyptes salasi, which inhabited the Atacama Desert about 30 million years ago.
