In the year of his graduation (Ph.D., Berlin, 1842) he was appointed teacher at a Realschule in Berlin, and in 1846 was admitted to the philosophical faculty of the university as privatdozent.
More early approaches of real education were promoted by the humanists Desiderius Erasmus, Georgius Agricola, Thomas More and Juan Luis Vives.
Bettringen has a high level high school the so called Scheffold Gymnasium after the former major of Schwaebisch Gmuend; a Realschule the Adalbert-Stifter Realschule, which is named after Adalbert Stifter; a elementary and Hauptschule the so called Uhlandschule after Ludwig Uhland and the Freie Waldorf Schule (Free Waldorf School).
Schoolchildren go to the primary school in Borod, the Hauptschule and Realschule in Hachenburg or the Gymnasien in Altenkirchen, Marienstatt and Dierdorf, each of which can be reached by public bus.
In July 1978 the school moved into the building of the former Kaiserliche Realschule, later known as Deutsche Höhere Privatschule (DHPS, German Higher Private School), in Leutwein Street (today Robert Mugabe Avenue).
It serves as a centre point in the middle Dietzhölze Valley, is the administrative seat, and is the centre for secondary education with Haupt- and Realschule, and a gymnasial branch for ten villages in the communities of Eschenburg and Dietzhölztal.
They were merged with Realschulen and Gesamtschulen to form a new type of comprehensive school called Stadtteilschule in Hamburg and Sekundarschule in Berlin (see: Education in Berlin, Education in Hamburg).
He was a student at the Realschule in Nuremberg and subsequently studied science and medicine at Erlangen and Würzburg.
After studying philology at the University of Giessen from 1831 to 1834, he taught at the gymnasium of Darmstadt, 1835–1837, at that of Mainz, 1837–1845, was prorector at the newly founded gymnasium of Hadamar in Nassau, 1845–1846, professor at the same place, 1846–1855, director of the Catholic teachers' seminary at Montabaur, 1855–1876, and at the same time director of the Realschule at the same place, 1855–1866.
Following his graduation from the Oberrealschule (secondary school) in Hamburg-Hamm he received a vocational education as type setter from 1 April 1925 and 31 March 1929 at the Hamburger Abendblatt (Hamburg Evening Newspaper).
He then took up a career as "high school" (Realschule) teacher, first in Iserlohn in Westphalia and from 1881 in Kiel.
From 1867-76, he was principal of the Realschule at Lindau and for the following 10 years directed the first dairy experiment station of Germany, in the vicinity of Lalendorf, Mecklenburg.
