In 1992, UNEP conferred the Institute with the Global 500 Roll of Honour for outstanding environmental achievements in helping to eradicate guinea worm from 302 villages in Jhabua district in educating and training women and villagers.
In the first quarter of 2011, 136 cases of Dracunculiasis (guinea worm disease) were reported from Kapoeta East out of 194 cases for all of South Sudan.
The Guinea worm case containment center in Kapoeta North, operated by the Southern Sudan Guinea Worm Eradication Program assisted by the Carter Center, plays a central role in achieving this goal.
