The Board of Certification serves as the national certifying body for athletic training, and its Standards of Professional Practice outline the roles and responsibilities of certified athletic trainers.

The certification program for entry-level Athletic Trainers was meant to establish standards to meet in order to enter the profession of Athletic training.

Canadian ABHM board member, Dr. Luay Dindo of Surrey, British Columbia, said, “The ABHM is not a subspecialty of another board of certification but a fully fledged, comprehensive board in hospital medicine. I believe that hospital medicine is its own specialty and necessitates a board of certification reflecting that fact.”
