In 1998, Thorp was the musical director for a performance of The Sound of Music, in which his wife played Maria von Trapp, and as a result, missed the ceremony at which the Tanner award recipients were recognized.
Through Maria Augusta Kutschera, later Maria Augusta von Trapp, who was a postulant in the abbey after World War I and whose life was the basis for the film The Sound of Music, the abbey has acquired international fame.

At the theatre Vanemuine, she has played Maria Von Trapp of "The Sound of Music" (opened in 2010) and appeared in supporting roles in a popular ethno musical "Peko" (premiered in 2011 as an open air production in Värska).
