9 unusual facts about Silurian

Bishop's Frome Limestone

It is perhaps the most significant of all of the calcretes which occur within the uppermost Silurian and lower Devonian sequence of rocks which constitute the Old Red Sandstone of the Anglo-Welsh Basin.

Charles Hepworth Holland

Remaining to do postgraduate research, he began work on the Ordovician of the Bala area and then the Silurian of Ludlow.

Claerwen Fault

It was active as a normal fault during deposition of Late Ordovician to mid-Silurian sedimentary rocks, downthrowing to the northwest.

Erwood

At the southern end of the community, on the Scithwen Brook, is Trericket Mill where Roderick Murchison recorded in the 1830s that he had identified "the first true Silurian".

Leintwardine

In the Upper Silurian series, the Leintwardine beds outcrop in the area and these consist of a calcareous sandstone which would have been suitable for making querns of a finer grade than could be obtained from Millstone grit, which was commonly used.

Lingen, Herefordshire

Geologically, the region is based entirely on Silurian beds, namely the marine Silurian and sizeable outcrops of Downtonian.

Lledrod

The solid geology of the area comprises Silurian mudstone of the Borth Mudstone Formation, which are partially overlain by superficial deposits of glacial till (Devensian diamicton).

Trewent Point

This Grey Sandstone site also represents the best exposure of Silurian rocks within the block.

Welsh Basin

The Welsh Basin was a northeast-southwest aligned back-arc depositional basin during the Cambrian, Ordovician and Silurian periods during which a considerable thickness of marine sediments was laid down in the area.

Ainiktozoon

The only discovered species, Ainiktozoon loganense, is known from a number of specimens from Silurian rocks (Ludlow series) at Lesmahagow in Scotland.

Arctinurus

Arctinurus was first reported during the construction of the Erie Canal through soft Silurian shales and mudstones in upstate New York.

Arnold Escher von der Linth

In particular, his scientific liaison with the Scottish geologist Roderick Murchison (1792-1871) made him a contributor to the discovery of the Silurian system, and the first systematic description of sedimentary rocks and their index fossils.

Chasmataspidida

The latest chasmataspid to be recognised is Loganamaraspis dunlopi from a famous Silurian fossil locality near Lesmahagow in Scotland.

Cobcrephora

Cobcrephora is a genus of that resembles the Palaeoloricates, known from the Silurian of Gotland.

Judoon

Alongside Sontaran commander Strax, a large battalion of Silurian warriors, and the newly space-pirating former crew of the Fancy, they help to apprehend Colonel Manton and his Cleric forces.

Julian and Sandy

The fiftieth Doctor Who Virgin New Adventures novel Happy Endings by Paul Cornell features a Polari-speaking Silurian musical duo from the 30th century called Jacquilian and Sanki.

Llandovery Group

The Tarannon group is represented by the Rhayader Pale Shales in Powys; in the Moffat Silurian belt in south Scotland by a thick development, including the Hawick rocks and Ardwell Beds, and the Queensberry Group or Gala; in the Girvan area, by the Drumyork Flags, Bargany Group and Penkill Group; and in Ireland by the Treveshilly Shales of Strangford Lough, and the shales of Salterstown, Co.

Llyn Alwen

It lies on the rolling Silurian moorland to the north-west of Mwdwl-eithin and about 10 km to the east of Betws y Coed.

Metacalymene

They lived in the Silurian period in the Ludlow age, from 422.9 ± 1.5 to 418.7 ± 2.8 million years ago.

Planiscutellum

They lived in the Silurian period in the upper Ludlow age, from 422.9 ± 1.5 to 418.7 ± 2.8 million years ago.

Silures

As was standard practice, as revealed by inscriptions, the Romans matched their deities with local Silurian ones, and the local deity Ocelus was identified with Mars, the Roman god of war.

Skryje

This little village became famous when French geologist Joachim Barrande discovered rich fossil deposits of Silurian fauna (namely trilobites) in the close surroundings of this village, when he was surveying the terrain for a horse-pulled railroad in 1840–1850.

The Hungry Earth

The Doctor and Rory capture one Silurian, Alaya (Neve McIntosh), and the Doctor instructs Rory and a local family to not harm Alaya, as it could spark a war.

William Samuel Symonds

In 1858 he edited an edition of Hugh Miller's Cruise of the "Betsey." He was the author of numerous essays on the geology of the Malvern country, notably of a paper "On the passage-beds from the Upper Silurian rocks into the Lower Old Red Sandstone at Ledbury" (Quart. Journ. Geol. Soc. 1860).

Woolhope Naturalists' Field Club

The club was and still is based in the city of Hereford, but took its name from the Woolhope Dome, an outcrop of Silurian rocks around the village of Woolhope to the south-east of the city.
