Names for the Dutch language

Duits has taken on the meaning of "German" and Diets meaning "Dutch" (along with "Nederlands") but no longer in general use (see the Diets article), dropped for its Nazi-era overtones.

The use of the term Nederlands, which eventually replaced its synonyms in Dutch, is first attested to in a work printed at Gouda in 1482.
