In 1954 IBM gave an influential demonstration of machine translation, known today as the "Georgetown-IBM experiment".

The NAS formed the "Automatic Language Processing Advisory Committee", or ALPAC, and published their findings in 1966.

The system was developed by Gilbert King, chief of engineering at ITC, along with a team that included Louis Ridenour.
